Colette Gravity Pistol

.40 caliber rifled bore, 9" octagonal iron barrel. Serial number VG2158. Unique mid-19th century "high capacity" gravity fed magazine pistol capable of holding 20 rounds of self-contained "Rocket Ball" ammunition (similar to that used with Volcanic repeating arms). Magazine mounted on top of barrel, mechanism raises the chamber to accept a new cartridge when the hammer is half-cocked and lowers it to firing position when the hammer is at full cock. Rounded iron frame is engraved with tight floral scrolls and game scene panels that include a hunting dog in full chase of a pheasant on the wing, repeated on each side of the frame. Iron triggerguard and butt cap nicely engraved as well. Checkered walnut stock.

Fine overall, with steel gray patina showing speckled age discoloration and minor surface oxidation. Action functions correctly. Fine bore. Fine grip with sharp checkering and minor handling marks. A fine example overall of a very scarce and very modern mid-19th century firearm design, rarely seen for sale.
